Srinagar, Sept 01 (KNO): Water supply in several parts of Srinagar, and other areas of the Valley affected over the past few days by cloudbursts and heavy rains will be fully restored by today, officials from the Jal Shakti Department (JSD), Kashmir, said on Monday. They said the upper catchment areas received multiple cloudbursts in recent days, leading to excessive silt and muddy water that burdened the system. “Due to the heavy load, water was earlier being provided in shifts. With conditions improving, normal supply will be resumed today,” officials told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO). The announcement coincided with a key administrative change in the department. Er. Rakesh Kumar Gupta formally took charge as the new Chief Engineer (CE) of Jal Shakti Kashmir, holding introductory meetings with staff and reviewing immediate challenges, including the city’s disrupted water supply. Officials said Gupta’s first focus will be on stabilizing Srinagar’s supply system and addressing the recurring issues caused by sudden weather events, which have become frequent in Kashmir’s fragile ecosystem. Notably, Srinagar’s water supply has faced repeated disruptions in recent weeks, with cloudbursts in various parts choking supply channels and leaving several areas dry, while planned maintenance shutdowns at the Sindh Power Canal HEP also curtailed availability. Although authorities deployed tankers and supplied water in shifts to ease hardship, residents struggled with muddy and rationed supply—(KNO)
